[Done] IP address change for ns2.webfaction.com next Wednesday

Posted in General by

From Wednesday February 16th ns2.webfaction.com will point to 178.79.142.142 (instead of 67.15.112.31 currently).

If you own any domains and use our DNS servers then you may have given the previous IP address to your domain registrar. If that is the case then we recommend that you update the IP address in your registrar’s control panel as soon as possible (you don’t have to wait until Wednesday). Since we are changing the IP address of just one of our 4 DNS server there is no danger of your website or emails being inaccessible while you make the change.

Some registrars only ask for the DNS servers names not their IP addresses. If that’s the case with your registrar then you don’t need to do anything.

You can find more information about our DNS servers here: http://docs.webfaction.com/user-guide/domains.html#pointing-your-domain-to-webfaction-s-servers

Web1 to Web56 now run Nginx as the frontend web server

Posted in General by

We have replaced the frontend web server on Web1 to Web56 with Nginx (previously it was running Apache). This means that all of our servers now run Nginx as their frontend web server. Note that Apache is still running behind Nginx to serve certain apps like PHP or Subversion. The change on Web1 to Web56 should be totally transparent but if you notice any issue open a ticket and we’ll look into it right away. The only change you should notice is that “static only” apps should now be a bit faster on Web1 to Web56 because they are now served directly by Nginx.

Change to MySQL configuration on all servers

Posted in General by

On 31 October 2010, we are changing the location of the socket used by MySQL. The current location is /tmp/mysql.sock – the new location will be /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock.

This change should be transparent to the majority of customers, but if you’re using a specific socket parameter in your application’s database configuration, you will need to update it to point to the new location.

Recent developments for Zope users

Posted in General by

We’ve just added a new installer to our control panel for Zope 2.10.8 with Plone 3.2.3. This is our first installer to use zc.buildout.

We’ve also released a Zope product to make it easier to use SSL with your Zope site. In the past, using SSL with Zope on our servers required you to tweak the code of Zope’s ZPublisher/HTTPRequest.py – our new product monkeypatches ZPublisher.HTTPRequest automatically, so you won’t need to touch any core Zope code. More information is available at:

Enjoy!
